Merry Christmas (1984)

This light hearted comedy is very entertaining, and very funny. This film is about a father with three children, two boys and a girl, and how the kids help him find love. The girl is played by Loletta Lee in an early role and you can already see her blossoming into a beauty. Karl Maka plays the father and he is just all over the place. The older son tries to help his dad by giving him advice, but sometimes the star of the show is the two year old Junior. His expressions, his little mannerisms are all funny. He gets some of the best laughs. There is, thankfully, Paula Tsui, who plays, literally, the lady next door Paula, whom the father's kids are trying to fix him up with. I don't know why he didn't try before, she's cute and sweet, but this is a comedy so these things have to play by their own rules. This comedy works because it doesn't lose focus. There are funny pranks, lots of running around, lots of shouting and, when you need it, a little warmth.

My Young Auntie (1981)

Successful director Liu Chia-liang (a.k.a. Lau Kar-leung)'s films usually had a strong traditional emphasis on martial virtue and the importance of family. This is very evident in his kung-fu comedy My Young Auntie which stars Hui Ying-hung as a young heiress to an esteemed kung-fu family embroiled in internal strife. Her gutsy and dauntless performance opposite Liu's starring role as her calm to psychotic elderly nephew-by-marriage, earned Hui the Best Actress Award at the 1981 HK Film Awards.

My Family (1986)

The family in question is burbling along quite nicely, with some teenage mini-crises (cantopop singer Lui Fong trying to impress a girl, May Lo trying to be cool at school) until mother Fung Bo Bo decides to join an actors club. Not only does she win the main role, she attracts the eye of director Billy Lau and tips the family's world into chaos.

The Blonde Fury (1989)

The script puts Cynthia Rothrock undercover and on the case of some nasty counterfeiters, who have an unequal-opportunities employment scheme which dictates that all their employees be top martial artists. Bad for Cynthia, cool for us.

The Big Deal (1992)

The "Saint" is a secret group comprised of a martial arts master and his two oddball daughters. They were brought to this earth to uphold justice by robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. A Robin Hood like saga set during modern-day Hong Kong.

The Lady Is the Boss (1983)

"The Lady Is The Boss" is kind of a transitional film between the old-school and the contemporary kung fu flicks. The basic theme is tradition, represented by the strict, discipline-demanding martial arts teacher Liu Chia Liang, versus change, represented by the American-raised, headstrong new boss of the school Kara Hui. To the film's credit, neither side is portrayed as entirely good or entirely bad; they both have their pluses and minuses. Like it often happens in this genre, the script is weak and can barely even fill the 90-minute running time. But the comedy is sometimes amusing and the action is often creative (disco dancing, bicycles, photo camera flashes, weights, etc. are used as fighting weapons; they may not all be so practical, but they've rarely - if ever - been used on the screen before). Kara Hui proves once again that she is one of the very best female action stars, and also looks pretty sexy. Everyone in the cast does his or her job well, but that guy who performs the "mad monkey" style at the end is utterly spectacular! A mostly satisfying film.
